English Introduction
The facial makeup of Xiang Yuin Peking Opera is an iconic symbol of Chinese theatrical artistry. Portraying the "Hegemon-King of Western Chu," Xiang Yu’s mask features a dominant black basewith white tear-like streaks, embodying his tragic heroism. Black signifies integrity, ferocity, and dignity, reflecting his legendary strength; the downward white lines from eyes to cheeks, resembling tears, foreshadow his defeat at Gaixia and suicide by the Wu River. The double-pupil pattern on the forehead alludes to historical records of his "double irises," highlighting his extraordinary status. With bold, angular strokes, sharp arched brows, and downturned lips, the design captures Xiang Yu’s pride, isolation, and inevitable downfall. It stands as the most recognizable "weeping face" (哭相脸) in the *Jing* (painted-face) role repertoire, epitomizing the fusion of myth, history, and visual symbolism.
